To when and where do I fish them? So I thought I would publish an article and try to answer the many questions I have received. In this article I will try to explain how to use a spinner-bait as well as how to gain confidence when you do. There are many uses for a spinner-bait; it can be used as a fish finder, a deep water bait, a shallow water bait, a bait that covers a lot of area in a short time, you can drop it like a worm or speed it up like a rattle trap. All these uses allow you to make it one of the most flexible baits in your tackle box.
A Bait that you could just about fish exclusively on a fishing trip and catch a good stringer of bass with day after day.

Get on board with the bait Mother Nature provided. There are several steps in making this work for you. Handle Bait Properly Handling live bait can be very important. Water temperature should make slow changes, if any, from the time shiners are placed in live well, until they reach destination to be fished. Plenty of oxygen must be provided also. Bass rarely hit bait that can’t run away from them. Fishing and Terminal Tackle Using proper tackle to match bait size can increase number of hits.
For example, if the bait is three inches long, stay with 3 ought or less on your hook size. For shiners 8 to 10 inches long, use 5 and 6 ought hooks.

Jump to; Lures Bait and tackle To fish for the most popular game fish species in the Indian River Lagoon, a good quality basic spinning outfit for lb test line will work just fine. My favorite is a seven foot medium action rod with a spinning reel holding about yards of line. I use a Shakespeare Ugly Stik Intracoastal graphite spinning rod, 7 foot, medium action, and rated for 6 to 12 lb test line. I have always been a fan of Ugly Stiks because even though the rod’s action is listed as “medium”, the tip has a lighter action for more sensitivity when casting lightweight lures such as un-weighted soft plastic lures or freelined live shrimp.
For a reel, any good quality spinning reel capable of holding about yards of whatever LB test of line you wish to use will work just fine. It is rated for 8 to 12 LB test and will hold about yards of 10 LB test mono.
These are essentially the same lure as Kastmasters. They have a good wiggle and will catch all types of fish. I fish in Lake Michigan and that means I’ve caught perch, crappie, trout, and bass on this.
Menhaden, mullet, silversides and anchovies effectively draw the attention of stripers, blues and false albacore — all of which are readily taken with live bait capture on-site. I choose to fish with artificials because I enjoy the challenge of identifying the available forage and then bringing a piece of wood or a clump of hair and feathers to life in a way that mimics that forage.
When the fish turn up their noses at the most perfectly presented artificial, their natural predatory instincts kick in and make it nearly impossible for them to resist a lively offering on the end of a line. Eels, sand worms, green crabs and, at certain times of year, bunker can be purchased alive and fished effectively in a variety of locations. The problem is that eels, worms and live bunker are relatively expensive, and if you plan on wetting a line outside of normal business hours when the best fishing takes place , the tackle shops have already closed down.
Rather than deal with such aggravation, I enjoy success by capturing the natural forage myself and fishing it right where I find it. The benefits are twofold: First, where there is prey, there are likely to be predator fish nearby. Where and When this Approach is Effective During the spring and fall, baitfish in the Northeast are bunched up and migrating north- and southward, respectively. During the warm summer months, on the other hand, forage species take up residence and disperse throughout protected inshore waters, and as a result, gathering bait becomes more difficult.
Catching your own bait is still a viable option — you just have to adjust your techniques.
