The most coveted type of antique key is the historic, ornate, skeleton key. Background It is generally agreed that the key and lock were invented in ancient Egypt and China simultaneously, in around BC. These ancient keys and locks were usually made from either wood or iron. Keys and locks really took hold during the Roman Empire, however, as geographical conquest brought great riches, which then needed to be protected against theft.
How to identify antique keys Compared to other collectibles, antique keys are fairly easy to get hold of and can often be found in charity and thrift stores, and at car-boot and garage sales, as well as in antique shops, auctions, and on-line. Antique keys are easily identifiable with reference to shape, colour, evidence of tarnishing, and weight. They may be unmarked, or have unique markings not seen today, such as symbols and hallmarks.
Identification Antique barrel keys have a short, hollow shaft and a rounded edge. Hollow barrel keys will weigh significantly less than antique skeleton keys, which are made of solid metal. The bow of an antique skeleton key will often be elaborately decorated. An antique skeleton key will be able to open most antique locks – skeleton keys are, of course, known for this function.

A wide variety of resources can help you come close to dating an antique roll-top desk. Perfectly symmetrical measurements are a clue that your desk was factory- rather than hand-made. Early roll-tops were built of heavy woods such as black walnut, and small local companies might choose from a variety of local hardwoods.
Most popular toward the end of the 19th century, close-grained oak was often quarter-sawn, or cut to promote a particularly even grain, reducing the possibility of warping and increasing durability. Mahogany, teak and cherry also appear in old desks, but from on, most desks were oak. A desk made from cherry after , for example, would have been a special order or the work of a local craftsman.
You may want to seek advice from an expert carpenter or cabinet-maker to identify the wood, especially if it has been stained or varnished to modify the color. Pegs are an older wood-joining technique, one that dated back to pioneers and perpetuated in communities where metal hardware had to be brought in from a distant factory. Labels may include the names of manufacturers of desk parts such as locks and keys.
Not all manufacturers placed labels in the same locations. Double-check the knee-hole, both sides of the bottom of the main drawer and the back of both the desk and its top. Finding a label lets you confirm age from a commercial history.

Modern piano Further information: Innovations in the piano In the period from about to , the Mozart-era piano underwent tremendous changes that led to the modern form of the instrument. This revolution was in response to a preference by composers and pianists for a more powerful, sustained piano sound, and made possible by the ongoing Industrial Revolution with resources such as high-quality piano wire for strings , and precision casting for the production of massive iron frames that could withstand the tremendous tension of the strings.
Over time, the tonal range of the piano was also increased from the five octaves of Mozart’s day to the seven octave or more range found on modern pianos. Broadwood square action click for page with legend Early technological progress in the late s owed much to the firm of Broadwood. John Broadwood joined with another Scot, Robert Stodart, and a Dutchman, Americus Backers , to design a piano in the harpsichord case—the origin of the “grand”.
