History of Birmingham , Economic history of Birmingham , Science and invention in Birmingham , and Timeline of Birmingham history Pre-history and medieval Birmingham’s early history is that of a remote and marginal area. The main centres of population, power and wealth in the pre-industrial English Midlands lay in the fertile and accessible river valleys of the Trent , the Severn and the Avon.
The area of modern Birmingham lay in between, on the upland Birmingham Plateau and within the densely wooded and sparsely populated Forest of Arden. Instead of the economies of scale of a low-paid, unskilled workforce producing a single bulk commodity such as cotton or wool in large, mechanised units of production, Birmingham’s industrial development was built on the adaptability and creativity of a highly paid workforce with a strong division of labour , practising a broad variety of skilled specialist trades and producing a constantly diversifying range of products, in a highly entrepreneurial economy of small, often self-owned workshops.
Birmingham was the terminus for both of the world’s first two long-distance railway lines: During the Victorian era , the population of Birmingham grew rapidly to well over half a million and Birmingham became the second largest population centre in England. Birmingham was granted city status in by Queen Victoria.

The cartoon shows information needed by the craftsmen to create the panel. This includes where the lead lines will be, so the glass cutter knows where to cut each piece of glass, which colour each piece of glass should be, and important painted details. The Burrell Collection has some examples of cartoons such as the one in ink on paper, below. It was made in for a Swiss heraldic panel.
The outline of each piece of glass, to show where it should be cut, was marked in red ochre, and letters were used to indicate which colour of glass should be used for each piece. In the early medieval period, before paper became widely available, the cartoon was drawn using lead or tin on a table prepared with whitewash or chalk. The glass would be cut to size, painted and assembled on top of the cartoon table. When the panel was finished, the table would be whitewashed over ready for the next panel, so the cartoon could not be preserved.
Very few examples of these boards survive, but documentary evidence suggests they were in use up until the 14th century. As paper became more easily available it started to replace the use of tables for cartoons as the cartoon could be stored for future reference and adaption . Because of the time and skill necessary to produce a cartoon they were often re-used.
When made on a table the design was often reused for other panels within the same window and simply reversed, or made to look different by using different coloured glass. As paper cartoons became more widely used they were often saved for re-use, either within a studio, passed on from glazier to glazier, or sold to another workshop. Because of this, very similar, almost identical panels can be found in different windows.

Last week, the home secretary agreed to ban all marches in Tower Hamlets and five surrouding boroughs. The ban was recently expanded to include the City of London. Tower Hamlets mayor, Lutfur Rahman, rightly declared this a victory for the local community and urged everyone that had planned to march against the EDL to now demobilise and stay away from Tower Hamlets to allow the police to deal with any unlawful EDL presence.
The EDL intends to hold a static protest, marshalled into the pens and cages they deserve and controlled by the police, where they cannot affect local people and where their hate cannot be heard. UAF, SWP and others are not willing to hear the wishes of the local communities and still, apparently, intend a major demonstration that risks flouting the law and certainly the ban that local people fought so hard to win. Additional police will be drafted in to help deal with any potential incidents.

It was a spotter’s paradise, and I wish I could have gone there more often, but as the journey involved catching a train from Leeds and changing stations at Manchester, my mother had a morbid fear that her small boy could get lost somewhere along the way. It never dawned on me that she had another, more tangible reason, like ‘Mother Love’, for example, but since she offered no other explanation, her refusal seemed very unfair.
Didn’t she realise how important this was to me? But the answer was an emphatic ‘No, no, no! A few weeks later I met the doyen of young train spotters called Bonzo. The Lighthouse building now comprises five upper storeys and a mezzanine roof space. The new curved roof structure created an additional storey-and-a-half and was designed to mimic the vaulted roofs of the nearby train stations. The ground-floor will be a dedicated retail space with the upper floors housing offices. The redevelopment of the Lighthouse building came with a number of complex challenges, not least that its footprint is directly situated over two underground tunnels — TfL District Circle and Metropolitan and Network Rail Thames Link.
The proximity of the tunnels meant that it was vital that the load of the building remained within strict parameters to prevent movement.
